What Is A Registered Counsellor and Counselling

The role of a Registered Counsellor is to provide emotional support in a confidential safe and warm environment as well as psycho-education. The emotional support and psycho education given is in order to enhance and move towards optimal personal functioning and to prevent the onset of psychological trauma or disorders.

A Registered Counsellor is highly and professionally trained over many years by recognised tertiary institutions. A registered Counsellor is trained in assisting the individual to understand and examine their thoughts, feelings and behaviour, in doing so guiding the individual/client to gain increased personal insight, self confidence, self-esteem and the ability to make informed, well thought through decisions. The role of the counsellor is to offer support with regards to daily problems, issues, stresses and worries in such a way that the support decreases the risk of developing a psychological disorder that may need intensive long term therapy or clinical intervention.

The training of a Registered Counsellor includes completing an accredited 4 year B Psych Honours degree or a Psych Honours degree accredited by the Health Professions Counsel of South Africa (HPCSA) as being an equivalent of a B Psych degree. The B Psych degree includes a 6 month/12 month internship in a specific field. The internship must be completed under the supervision of a Registered Psychologist. Only once the B Psych Degree has been successfully completed does one qualify to write the HPCSA board exam. One must pass the board exam with a minimum of 70% to then become a Registered Counsellor. Registered Counsellors as bound by the rules, regulations and ethical codes as laid out by the HPCSA.

By seeking counselling with a Registered Counsellor the client is also able to (depending in the terms and conditions of the specific medical aid) claim the session charges/part thereof from their medical aid.
